What's In Our Day

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world". Nelson Mandela
Math

Our day begins with calendar math.  We use the calendar to teach counting, numbers, days of the week, and patterns. We then begin our Envision Math lessons that are aligned with the Common Core and Florida standards.  Parents can access Envision Math workbooks online to support their child's knowledge and help students with homework.  In addition to our core lessons, I incorporate math journal word problems, songs, and math power point activities.  Students will also spend time on the computer with the I-Ready computer math lessons each day to build their math skills.

Language Arts

Our classroom uses the Reading Street curriculum published by Pearson.  It is taught through a combination of large group instruction integrating flipcharts on the large Promethean whiteboard as well as animation from the Pearson website.  My lessons are integrated with phonics lessons, phonemic awareness, songs, hands on activities, and individual work.  Students practice letter sounds, vocabulary through their "Amazing Words", as well as recognizing sight words. By years end, students are generally able to read over 100 individual words and have learned to sound out short words so that they can read simple stories.

Social Studies and Science

Social Studies and Science are integrated throughout our day.  We learn about communities and how people work within those communities.  The students have opportunities to learn about their towns, country, and how to make and follow maps. Students will also learn about the symbols of our country, travel, and will compare past and present events.

We also do experiments in science and use the scientific process to learn about earth, animal, and life science.

Technology

Our classroom uses technology integrated throughout our day. Students use a program called I-Ready for assessment purposes in math and reading.  They are assessed at the beginning, middle, and at the end of the school year to evaluate their growth.

Students are also using Ipads in the classroom to enhance their learning.  Feel free to inquire about the apps we are using.
